Freesia are deciduous perennials with trumpet or funnel shaped flowers that are usually scented. Standing on upright stems with narrowly lance-shaped leaves, the Freesia is a cottage garden favourite. Freesia grow wild in the Cape Province of South Africa - so we tend to think that growing them here will be difficult, but this simply isn’t true. Plant in a sunny area in well-drained soil, making sure to check every now and then that they aren’t getting too much moisture. These maintenance checks are a small price to pay, in return for the gloriously sweet (but not sickly) fragrance of the Freesia come June. Red, yellow and white Freesia produce the strongest scent, so you can customise the strength of the perfume of your bouquets.
